The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is  located on Nguyen Van Huyen Street, Cau Giay, about 8km from the center of Hanoi. The museum has great cultural significance on a national and local scale. About the museum

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology  was established in 1981 in Hanoi with an area of ​​3.27 hectares. This project was designed by architect Ha Duc Linh and interior designer Veronique Dollfus (French). The museum is like a miniature picture of the history and culture of the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam with a variety of unique cultural features. These artifacts are displayed in different categories such as: clothing, jewelry, weapons, musical instruments, religion, beliefs and many other spiritual activities.

What’s attractive about Vietnam Museum of Ethnology?

The museum is divided into three main exhibition areas: the Drum Dong building, the outdoor exhibition area and the Southeast Asia exhibition area. From the outside looking in, visitors will be attracted by the presentation and layout from form to content, which are very scientific and logical, easily grasping the unique cultural colors of each ethnic group.

Drum Building

Drum Dong Building has two spaces, one themed and constantly renewed exhibition space on the 2nd floor, while the 1st floor space introduces the identity of 54 ethnic groups. There are 15,000 artifacts, 42,000 films and pictures depicting daily life, costumes, clothes, agricultural tools, religious beliefs as well as customs of ethnic minorities. In order to serve other visitors, the artifacts here are mainly translated into 3 languages: Vietnamese, English, French and some other languages ​​for visitors to conveniently visit and learn about the museum.

Visitors will be amazed at the beautiful artifacts that are carefully displayed from clothes, tools to models of rituals, funerals, weddings, etc. All are reconstructed as a miniature corner of life as well as life. traditional culture of the ancient ethnic minorities.

Outdoor exhibition area

After visiting the Drum Dong building, visitors will encounter a large courtyard, which is an outdoor display area. Here, you will encounter the unique architecture of the Toc people such as the Tay’s stilt house, the Ede’s stilt house, the Tay’s stilt house, the H’mong’s house on stilts roofed with Pomu. Located in the garden area, there is also a rice mill using the water power of the Dao people.

Southeast Asia exhibition area

Next, visitors can visit the Southeast Asian exhibition in the museum. From a distance, visitors will notice that the exhibition area is built in the shape of a kite – a traditional culture not only of Vietnam but of the whole ASEAN region. The kite symbolizes dreams, ambitions, and freedom that lasts forever.

Here regularly exhibits about Southeast Asian culture, Indonesian glass paintings, a glimpse of Asia and around the world. There are also educational activities, halls, cinema rooms, multimedia rooms, visitors can watch cultural documents not only of Vietnam but also of ASEAN countries. This is the bridge, friendship and cooperation relationship between Vietnam and friends in Southeast Asia as well as in many parts of the world.
