Muong Hum Market in Lao Cai is a bustling address, the convergence of many cultures and cuisines of ethnic minorities. Muong Hum Market opens on Sundays, from 7am to 1pm. Sapa tourists can go from Lao Cai to Muong Hum by bus for 20,000 VND, or motorbike taxi for 70,000 VND.
From 7 a.m., lines of people crammed into cramped buses going from Lao Cai to Muong Hum. The car was packed with women and girls, sitting cross-legged, legs swinging on sacks piled up in the middle of the aisle. After 3 hours by car is a walk through the valleys and climb the cliffs. Merchandise was packed in embroidered bags, hemp bags, sacks, and shoulder baskets. The muddy slippers and the rolled up hems of their pants showed the long and hard journeys they had to go through.
The most eye-catching market scene is the stream next to the market. On the banks of the stream, the horses waiting for their owners to enter the market gather by the stream with all colors of hair, sometimes they neigh, making the mountain picture more vivid, very rare in other places. The suspension bridges or stone bridges crossing the stream always have people leading horses back and forth…
At the market, the pink and blue ao dai of Thai girls huddled around handmade silver jewelry. In the other corner are orange and blue H’Mong dresses huddled around a pile of pomegranates. Right next to it, bamboo shoots are laid out on banana leaves, and Ha Nhi healers explain the use of plant medicinal powders they have gleaned from the forest. Going deep into the market, a group of children slurped over bowls of pho, the noodle soup was still very fresh because it was sliced just a few hours ago.
The girls and boys in the village go to the market not only to buy and sell but also to learn, have fun, and find a partner, so everyone is as beautiful as going to the festival. The Hmong girls in sexy floral skirts and brightly dyed woolen wigs look like a walking flower, shimmering and blooming. Equally beautiful is the Red Dao outfit: the girls wear black indigo clothes with patterns on their breasts like butterflies and bright red scarves with lots of silver jewelry, always twinkle.
If you have the opportunity to participate in a Sapa tour , do not miss the opportunity to go to Muong Hum market to feel the beauty of the natural scenery and the peaceful life of the people here.
