Ma Phuc pass has a length of more than 3.5 km, nearly 700 m high above sea level, through 7 spiky slopes with quite dangerous sleeves, winding along the limestone mountainside, with many twists and turns. One side is a high cliff, the other side is a deep abyss with narrow ravines.
The pass is wide and beautiful, the high and low mountains follow each other, this side is steep in the direction of Quang Uyen stretching with green corn and rice fields, right on the side of the road is a small village with stone fenced houses. solid, beautiful surroundings.
At each time of the day, Ma Phuc Pass has a different beauty. Even in the middle of summer, if you cross the pass in the early morning or when the sun is out, the top of the pass will appear foggy, the landscape becomes pristine and fanciful. When the fog clears, the sky is bright, white clouds stand out against the blue sky, feeling everything becomes full of life, the wind blowing brings a feeling of coolness.
According to experts, Ma Phuc pass is also a unique geological heritage site. About 260 million years ago this area had many active volcanoes under the sea. Volcanic lava erupting in the sea water cooled suddenly forming stacked pillow bridges of various sizes and colors. At the pass, the contact with limestone (white) can see another type of spherical blue-black stone (knee-shaped basalt) which is a great testimony to the evolution and change of the earth, worthy of a heritage. special geological products.
Ma Phuc Pass is the first stop of the tourist route to the east of Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark, including districts of Tra Linh, Quang Uyen, Trung Khanh, Ha Lang, and Phuc Hoa. From this stop, visitors can continue their journey to explore the hiking route into Nam Tra mountain, Quoc Toan commune (Tra Linh); visit, experience the indigenous culture of making incense, “homestay” model, enjoy local products in Phja Thap village, Quoc Dan commune and Pac Rang forging village, Phuc Sen commune (Quang Uyen); sightseeing, adventure tourism on the blue Que Son river, Khuoi Ky stone village, Nguom Ngao cave and Ban Gioc waterfall in Dam Thuy commune (Chong Khanh)…
It is the degree of difficulty that creates a unique feature here. Anyone who climbs the pass knows the story of the hero Nung Tri Cao – a man who belongs to the history and legend of the Nung ethnic group in this majestic border.
Nung Tri Cao (born in 1025 in Cao Bang) is considered a great hero, according to his father, Nung Ton Phuc rebelled to claim the king’s name in 1038. After his father was captured and killed by the Ly Dynasty (in 1039), Nung Tri Cao and his mother, A Nung, continued the fight. Soon, Nung Tri Cao was defeated by the Ly dynasty and captured. But King Ly Thai Tong fell in love and did not kill, but gave Nung Tri Cao a title to guard the border.
Unexpectedly, Nung Tri Cao revolted to occupy the western land of Cao Bang and proclaimed himself king (1052). The force is getting stronger and stronger and attracts many knights to follow. Nung Tri Cao once fought against the Song Dynasty and occupied 8 provinces (districts) of the two provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi, China. Three years later, when he proclaimed himself king, Nung Tri Cao was destroyed by the Song dynasty. This is a picture at the end of the road, the hero Nung Tri Cao after the battle, returned from patrolling the border. The fatigue of both men and horses has created a magnificent image of this cliff-side mountain pass: “The pass is upturned and sucks the clouds in the sky. The breath is long and tiring. The horse neighs and looks up for the last time. Then bow down and kneel at your feet.” That’s why people named the pass Ma Phuc (kneeling horse).
It is also a true fairy tale that once took place. Refusing to bind their feet like the image of “Ma Phuc”, Uncle Ho’s soldiers disassembled each part of the artillery vehicle, transported it through the jungle, and carried weapons back to the battlefield along the back of the pass. The local people teamed up to find that mythical road, carrying equipment and soldiers to overcome the enemy’s lines, across the mountains.
It is a glorious song of the army and people of Cao Bang with the images: “The mountain walks in the cold mist. The mountain goes in the clouds. The mountain walks in the wind. The mountain quietly watches itself in the deep valley. The mountain is mysterious. flock of horses. The mountains coincide with thousands of mighty soldiers…”.
Now Ma Phuc pass , in addition to the busy bus rides up and down, there are also markets meeting right on the top of the pass. One session every 5 days on the 3rd and 8th of every month. The Nung, Tay, and Dao people from remote villages cross the mountains and carry goods to meet. A very “Cao Bang” market hobby. Come on chestnuts from Chongqing up. Come on knives, hoes and shovels from Quang Uyen. Again chicken, pork, fresh bamboo shoots brought from 5 districts. Especially fresh beef from the two communes on the high pass…
The boys and girls had the opportunity to sing Sli in the fog. The flower-like faces of the girls light up the top of the pass. Stopping at the market are trucks carrying goods or tourists passing by. Many people slurped with bowls of corn porridge, or sizzled with fragrant roasted chestnuts that burned their lips.
Conquering Ma Phuc Pass , seeing the panoramic nature and buying Cao Bang specialties right at the market on the top of the pass is an extremely interesting experience for every visitor when coming here.
