Located in Bac Ninh city, Le Phung Hieu temple is an important relic. The temple was built in the Ly dynasty, worshiping three historical figures, Le Ca, Le Hai and especially Le Phung Hieu. People in the village often call it the temple of the three saints, also known as Hoa Dinh temple.

The temple has the traditional three-letter architecture commonly found in temple architecture, including the Tien Tue, Thieu Huong, and Hau Cung buildings. The whole temple was built with ironwood frame, roof tiled with embossed decoration Long Ly Quy Phuong. The present temple has been remodeled many times, mostly affected by the ravages of war and the loss of time. Temples of Le Ca, Le Hai and Le Phung Hieu are located adjacent to the large-scale communal house behind forming a relic complex. An interesting thing about the temple is that it not only worships a saint, but also worships people who have contributed to the country and were transformed here.

There are 2 stele named “Phà Luc Tam Vi Thanh”, dating from Thanh Thai Thap Tam in 1901 and the stele The Legend of Bi Ky, dating from Tu Duc Tam Thirteen 1880, which clearly shows the background and merits. those who are worshiped at the temple. The information about the life of Le Phung Hieu is attached to the legends in the land of Hoa Dinh, Tien Du, Kinh Bac. This was the place where he lived during his childhood until he became a mandarin, and where he set up camp against foreign invaders, so he was established as the village Thanh Hoang.

Legend of Le Phung Hieu

Le Phung Hieu was a famous general who fought against foreign invaders under the Ly dynasty. He is also famous for the story of giving birth to a field of throwing knives. According to old history books and bibliographies, Le Phung Hieu was born on the 8th day of the first month of the Year of the Horse, from a farming family in Thanh Hoa. He entered the office under the reign of King Ly Thai To. In 1028, after supporting King Ly Thai Tong to put an end to the riots and power struggles of the kings and dignitaries, he was awarded the title of Do Thong Vuong General. In 1044, the Champa army invaded the country, Le Phung Hieu supported King Ly Thanh Tong to fight the enemy and returned victorious. Later, he also led the army many times to fight the Chiem Thanh invaders. He established many victories with the Ly dynasty.

 

Legend of Thac Dao Dien

After making many merits, Le Phung Hieu was rewarded by the king. He asked to stand on the Ice Mountain and throw his knife away. Wherever the knife fell, he asked for that land to be given as an inheritance.

Binh Sinh possesses extraordinary health, he stood on the top of Bang Son mountain, threw a large knife, went more than 10 miles, the knife fell in the direction of Da Mi. The whole large land belongs to General Le Phung Hieu. Since then, Dao Dien waterfall (knife throwing field) officially became one of the types of land through feudal dynasties such as Quan Dien, Presidential Field, Son Lang… To this day, a number of conventions and customs still remain. preserved and passed down from generation to generation, as a way of paying respects to Le Phung Hieu and those who are worshiped. According to the old custom, the son who had an official household registration in the village until the age of 50 had to go to the village to serve, called Khanh Tiet. The temple door only opens when there is an important occasion and only those in the Khanh Tiet department can go inside, look after and take care of it.

Before entering the temple, people in Khanh Tiet must clean the hotel by bathing in ginger water. Only a few people are allowed to enter the harem to bathe and clean the statue. When walking, do not turn your back to the altar, walk backwards when you want to go out, all showing respect to the divine.

For the Hoa Dinh people, a year will have 4 important holidays with the birthdays of saints Le Ca and Le Hai on the 6th day of the 2nd lunar month and the birthday of saint Le Phung Hieu on the 8th day of the 1st lunar month. festivals and singing of the whole village. As for the anniversaries of Le Ca, Le Hai and Le Phung Hieu, only sacrifices are allowed.
