Phu Nhai Basilica  is also known as Phu Nhai Holy Temple or Phu Nhai Church. This church is located in Xuan Phuong – Xuan Truong – Nam Dinh commune. As one of the famous religious architectures, Phu Nhai church is a Roman Catholic church of Bui Chu diocese.

Built in 1866, when King Tu Duc signed a decree to pardon religion, Phu Nhai church was initially built with only rudimentary materials such as wood and thatched roof. In 1881, the second church was built according to Asian architecture including 2 large bell towers. Following that, the 3rd church was built according to typical Gothic architecture and inaugurated in 1992.

Through the traces of time, Phu Nhai church was also severely degraded and restored many times. In 2004, the church was remodeled with a blue-gray exterior that looks very beautiful and somewhat mysterious and attracts many tourists here to visit and take pictures.

To  visit Phu Nhai Basilica,  you can travel in many different ways such as passenger car, motorbike, private car or train.

– For tourists in the North to Nam Dinh:  the most convenient means of transportation is to take a bus at Giap Bat and My Dinh bus stations with garages: Xuan Truong – Nam Dinh, Hai Hau – Nam Dinh… Prices range from 100k – 200k/pax/way.

– For tourists in the South to Nam Dinh:  the superior and convenient means is that you can take a plane to Noi Bai airport and then take a Truong Son bus to Xuan Truong with a fare of about 200k / 1 turn. Or you can also go by train from Nam to Nam Dinh and then take a taxi, or a bus to return to Xuan Truong.

– For backpackers:  The best, most comfortable and freest option is the form of traveling by motorbike from Hanoi to Xuan Truong with a range of more than 100km. Along the way, you will discover beautiful roads, peaceful village scenes and enjoy the attractive specialties of Thanh Nam when passing through the city.

Gothic Architecture

Exploring Phu Nhai Basilica  , you will surely be mesmerized by the beautiful and majestic Gothic architecture that it brings. This style began to thrive in the second half of the Middle Ages in Western Europe with meticulous and sophisticated decor.

The statues embossed on the door frame, the side of the church along with bold decorative lines of grapevines have brought a different beauty and technique to this holy temple. Moreover, Phu Nhai church also owns 2 bell towers and 4 bells transferred from France, bringing a superficial and horizontal appearance to this holy temple.

 

 

Church facade

Phu Nhai holy temple  was built on a very large land with an area of ​​up to 2,160m2. From afar, you will see a glimpse of the main and small roofs interspersed with each other, bringing the ancient and proud to the church. 

The facade of the church was built from the outside in with the main square in front, and on the right is a 17m high statue of Saint Dominic. This is the Catholic saint who founded the Deminico mission in the 12th century. And it is also the missionary line that was introduced to Vietnam in the 16th century.

On the left, there is a mausoleum storing the remains of 83 martyrs of Phu Nhai diocese with a height of up to 15m. Around the church are very beautiful reliefs, showing the 14 Ways of the Cross.

 

 

Church bell tower

As mentioned above,  Phu Nhai church  owns 2 bell towers up to 44m high, the roof of the church is up to 30m high, the length of the cathedral is about 80m long, the width is 30m. The two towers are symmetrically built on both sides with equal height, a symbol of authority. 

Because Phu Nhai Cathedral is a place to honor the Mother of God, the statue of Mary is placed in the middle, on both sides are two lovely little angels. These two angels are symbols of the god who was born and is reigning in heaven. The other statues below are images of the bishop who once looked after Bui Chu diocese. Inside the tower, there are extremely precious saints made of ivory transferred from France. Visitors standing on the 2 church towers will fully see the beautiful picture of the land of Xuan Truong – Nam Dinh.

 

 

Soaring dome system

Behind the two main doors made of wood is a curved, soft, soaring dome system that exudes grandeur and splendor in architecture. Like many other Catholic churches, Phu Nhai Basilica has the last altar. On the altar is the appearance of the highest position of the statue of Jesus Christ, below is the intricately carved Immaculate Conception.
