1. Where is the original 13 banyan tree?

The image of banyan trees, water wharf, communal house yard must be familiar to the countryside of Vietnam. These banyan trees are mentioned so much by Hai Phong people because perhaps partly because of its special location, right in the middle of the crowded and bustling city. Therefore, the path to the original 13 banyan tree is quite easy.

2. The 13-root banyan tree – The largest ancient tree in Vietnam

The 13-original banyan tree in Hai Phong is more than 300 years old and has been associated with the lives of the port people for a long time. This famous large old banyan tree was recognized as a natural heritage in 2014 and has become one of the spiritual tourist attractions attracting many visitors.

The 13-original banyan tree in Hai Phong makes many people surprised when they see it for the first time. The tree has a diameter of about 40m, a height of over 10m, with 1 main root and 12 sub-roots. The main root is estimated to have a circumference of about 8.2m, 12 sub-roots grow around the main root with a circumference of about 2 – 5m. The main and secondary roots are connected by branches with a diameter of about 1m. The total circumference of this special banyan tree can be up to 30m. And the wide canopy can be up to several hundred m2. 

3. Legend of 13 original banyan tree in Hai Phong

There are many  stories of the 13 original banyan tree  told by the people here. The most mentioned legend is probably the story of Hai Ba Trung riding an elephant passing here during the battle against the Southern Han army in the past. Hai Ba’s elephants used their trunks to break the tops of the banyan tree to eat, so the banyan tree is limited in height and can only grow horizontally.

Another story about a 13-root banyan tree is told by people, in the past, a general on the way to fight the enemy stopped here and tied his horse to the top of the tree. So the top of the tree was broken. This is why the tree has such a modest height. But in return, the canopy is extremely developed. 

4. Who is the 13 original banyan tree in Hai Phong worshiping?

If you have come here, you will also be told the story of who the 13 original banyan tree in Hai Phong worships. Right under the banyan tree is a shrine, inside there is a stone stele engraved with Han Nom characters. This temple was erected and  worshiped Duc Tho Vuong  – who had merit in helping people to reclaim and establish hamlets. Besides, people also said that the temple also worships mandarins, aunts, uncles, gods and spirits.

Besides, the people of Hai Phong also believe that this banyan tree temple is ruled by Lady Chua Nam Phuong, so as a long-standing custom, every full moon week, public holiday, Tet holiday, people come here to smoke incense and worship. Lord Ba Nam Phuong and pray for peace. 

Legend has it that in the past, Lady Chua Nam Phuong and her two maids rode a rickshaw around Hai Phong. And the 13-root banyan tree is her last stop. Therefore, this place becomes one of the sacred spiritual places and people take great care of the incense.
