Nghe Temple in Hai Phong  is a destination not to be missed in your  Hai Phong trip . Nghe Temple is located in the center of the city of red phoenix flowers and is a long-standing cultural and historical relic. 1. Where is Nghe Temple in Hai Phong?

Along with Cao Linh Pagoda and Pho Chieu Pagoda in Hai Phong, Nghe Temple is one of the   extremely famous historical sites of Hai Phong in the port country. Nghe Temple is also known as  Thousand Temple  or  “An Bien Ancient Temple” . The location of Nghe Temple is in the Me Linh sub-area and borders two streets (Le Chan street, Me Linh street).

2. Who is Nghe Temple in Hai Phong worshiping?

Nghe Temple in Hai Phong is the  place to worship female general Le Chan . Her hometown is in An Bien village (now in Dong Trieu, Quang Ninh). She came to the land at the confluence of the Tam Bac River and the Cam River to establish a village and develop mulberry farming, silkworm rearing, and seafood fishing. The female general named this land An Bien (now Le Chan district) to remember her roots. 

Le Chan was a talented female general who excelled in the uprising against the invading Eastern Han army of Hai Ba Trung. She fought bravely, made many resounding victories and was crowned by Trung Vuong himself as the  “internal military authority chapter” , defending the Hai Tan region (now Hai Phong).

3. History of Nghe Temple in Hai Phong

The history of  Nghe Temple in Hai Phong  originates from the memory of female general Le Chan’s exploits and feats. Le Chan villagers set up a small thatched shrine to worship her located in the land bordering the Cam and Tam Bac rivers. Later, the temple was rebuilt, tiled and tiled. 

By the end of the 19th century, the land of An Bien village belonged to the French colonialists (according to the treaty of the year 1874), so the villagers of An Bien moved the Nghe temple to the south to the present location. According to the explanations about Nghe Temple in Hai Phong, in 1919, the temple was built on a larger scale and more superficial.

In 1975, the State ranked Nghe Temple as a national historical and cultural relic. In 2008, Hai Phong restored the temple to make it more spacious.

4. Directions to Nghe Temple in Hai Phong

According  to Hai Phong travel experience , if you depart from the city center, to go to Nghe Le Chan temple, it will take you  more than 30 minutes to move . This distance is  more than 15km long . Check out the fastest route:

  • From the center of Hai Phong, go to the North 650m
  • Turn right, go straight 1.8km
  • Turn left onto Dragon Gate Road, go straight 750m
  • Turn right onto Luong Khanh Thien street
  • Turn right onto Hoang Thiet Tam Street, go straight to Hoang Quoc Viet Street
  • Turn right, go along provincial road 360 3.1km
  • At the roundabout, turn left onto the 4th exit to enter Truong Chinh Street. Continue going straight through Niem bridge. 
  • Go straight on Tran Nguyen Han Street for another 1.8km and then turn right onto Tran Duc Canh Street
  • Go straight for 1km and turn right onto Me Linh Street, continue to turn right on Le Chan and go another 28m to reach Nghe Temple in Hai Phong.

5. Visit the unique architecture at Nghe Temple in Hai Phong

Traveling to Hai Phong 2 days 1 night , you should immediately visit the architecture of Nghe Temple! Nghe Temple in Hai Phong was built in the style of the Nguyen Dynasty in the 20th century. 

5.1. Nghe temple structure 

Nghe Temple consists of  three gates , burning incense, worshiping hall, Giai Vu, harem, stele house, where stone horse and stone elephant statues are located . Later, people built more four palaces.

In the  pavilion, there are 5 houses supported by 16 ironwood columns and placed on 16 meticulously carved and elaborately carved stones. In the middle of the roof of the house of worship are the lines “An Bien ancient temple” in Chinese embossed very large. 

The harem of Nghe Temple  consists of 3 houses built higher than the worshiping house. The design in the harem is a 2-storey roof style to create majesty and surface for the house.

5.2. The art of carving on stone and wood – a unique feature of Nghe Temple

Various themes from dragon, lily, Quy, phoenix to pine, chrysanthemum, bamboo and apricot are embossed, submerged and carved with intricate patterns. The roofs and blades of the temple are also embossed with flying dragons, dancing phoenixes, scenes of Hai Ba Trung commanding troops, scenes of Yen Tu mountains…

Nghe Temple up to now still  retains many valuable stone carvings  such as a large stone stele with a biography of female general Le Chan carved from the Nguyen Dynasty. At the altar, there is a soft embossed stone about the dragon cloud dance. At the incense burning court, there is an elaborately embossed stone collapse of the bird. animals, flowers and leaves from the solid stone block.
