The defense is extremely solid and beneficial. Here, the French army arranged the 3rd Battalion of the Algerian Regiment, which was very good at capturing it.

On the side of the Vietnam People’s Army, capturing the Eastern peaks, including the D1 peak, is a very important task in the second attack of the Dien Bien Phu campaign. The unit in charge of destroying fortress D1 is Battalions 166, 154, Regiment 209, 312th Battalion.

At exactly 5:00 p.m. on March 30, 1954, the artillery calibers of the Vietnamese army simultaneously fell on D1 hill and the eastern heights of the central area of ​​Muong Thanh. Within 30 minutes, the 209th Regiment captured D1 hill, the next morning the French counter-attacked in conjunction with the air force to recapture the stronghold, the battle took place fiercely after 2 days the Vietnamese army had completely mastered it. hill base D1. After capturing the cluster of hills D, the Vietnamese soldiers turned this place into a firing position of the 209th Regiment, continuing to support other units to capture the remaining French strongholds. It can be said that the battle taking place on the eastern hills, including D1 is one of the important battles contributing to the victory of the second attack of the Dien Bien Phu campaign.

On the historical land of Dien Bien today, there are a number of monuments and reliefs built to fully, truthfully and vividly represent the great battle of our army and people more than a year ago. 6 decades, of which the Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument is the largest and only bronze monument in the project of works to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the historic Dien Bien Phu victory. The model of the monument for construction is the work of sculptor Nguyen Hai, a native of Cai Be, Tien Giang, in his youth he was a soldier of the famous 307 Battalion. In 1963, he graduated from the University of Fine Arts and started composing the Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument. Talking about this work, he confided: “I have never been to Dien Bien, but when I gathered to the North, the echo of Dien Bien Phu victory was still everywhere through books and newspapers and especially through songs of music. Dr. Hoang Van, Do Nhuan. After graduating from the University of Fine Arts, I arose in me a sense of composing about Dien Bien Phu and so I plunged into hard work.
